Below are some paintings from my recent excursions on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The top image is "Skyline Drive III" an 18x24" oil painting that was 99 % completed on location, during a 4-5 hour session. The middle picture is of me at work at one of the overlooks, photo courtesy of Lynda Ward. The bottom image is "Skyline Drive IV", 18x24" oil painting. This one was started on location in late afternoon. I started by covering the canvas in a thin layer of red-orange to force myself to make more imaginative color choices. Much of the orange shows through in the final painting, imparting luminosity and color vibrancy. Half of this painting was done on site, with additional work in the studio after a few weeks of reflection. These paintings and others from the Skyline series may be seen at Lynden Gallery in Elizabethtown PA from September through November 7, 2009. More images and information available on my website.
